Teensy Maestro v2 Kit: Updates

You may have seen this announcement from Simon (NV0E) and Len (KD0RC) on the FlexRadioSmartSDR groups.io or on the main FlexRadio Community.

I'm planning on offering a kit which will include:
  • Teensy Maestro v2 PCB (including front panel*)
  • Components required for assembly
  • A 3D printed custom designed case (this is a work in progress)

I don't have a price yet but my aim is to keep this as low as possible. If you're interested in hearing more please fill out the form below and I'll be in touch via email. I'll also keep this page up to date as well.

Once I have a price worked out for the components alongside shipping I'll send a preorder link to everyone who has signed up to the form below. If there is enough interest I'll order additional components to fulfil.

The preorder will come with the option to pay a small deposit (with the remainder to be paid prior to shipping), or the full amount. This will be provided via my shop so all the usual payment methods are accepted (card, PayPal etc).

* This may be replaced in the future by combining it into the 3D printed case but initially this will be included in the kit.

Updates

4th September

This week I've been prototyping some ideas for the case while I wait for a few more components to arrive.

Please remember, this design is likely to change and the print quality of the final print will be much higher (in PETG which is much more heat resistant). I used of this grey as I had some laying around but I actually quite like it.

One thing for sure is that the final case will not sit flat - I'll be figuring out a mount setup over the weekend. I'd really like this to be extensible as well.

Once I get the initial orders shipped I'll make the STL files available under a suitable licence for anyone to print their own (along with any new versions) as well as modify.

I will take the protective plastic cover off the screen when I'm finished fitting everything!

Speaker for the sidetone embedded into the left corner of the case. No need for any screws.

Same for the ethernet port.

The back cover. Admittedly I went a bit 'port mad' here. Seven is too many! That will certainly be changed.

You will have noticed a (badly positioned, and if you're particularly eagle-eyed, the wrong gender) USB-C port for providing power to the Teensy board. This will be a USB-C female panel mounted adapter (when they arrive).

I've been chatting to Simon and Len about buttons for the additional functions available on the board. I'll be looking at updating the case to support some of these, definitely PTT and Tune. Possibly CW macros. Comments welcome.

1st September

Components are still arriving. I've just ordered the last batch of what I'll need for the initial run of 30 kits.

There has been more interest noted but ordering additional components should be simple enough going forward.

Over the weekend I spent time making up the board to get a good feel for it. I'm excited to get this up and running!

I've always had a case design in mind which would be very similar to the Maestro we know and seeing the PCB mounted in my holder was very much confirmation that is the style I'll go with. Hopefully I'll have something very basic in CAD for the next update.

29th August

My partner is on the verge of leaving me as her office is closest to the front door and has been answering it all week and taking in my parcels!

There are still a few more items en-route and I've got a few more components to finish sourcing (just quantity) and I'll be in a good position to start packing these up.

This weekend I'm going to make up a kit for myself to build as a "practice run" to see if all the components I've ordered work as expected. I'll also be weighing everything and crunching numbers so I can get the preorder up on the site. Everyone on this list will get a notification on that first.

The PCB and panel look fantastic.

25th August

Updated the main text above as its clear the interest is there. I've also covered some  common questions I've been asked.

Bigger update midweek as the PCB and more components arrive.

23rd August

Components are starting to arrive now. I'm going to need a bigger table.

Once I confirmed I have everything and its all suitable I'll be able to present a price. I'll also start designing a case for this which will be included in the kit. I'll then send a pre-order link to everyone who has expressed an interest.
